Ginger McCain

Born 21st September 1930. Racehorse trainer who guided the legendary Red Rum to three Grand National wins in the 1970’s. Began his career in a small stable behind a used car showroom in Southport, he now operates from his stable complex in Cholmondley, Cheshire. Back to top form in 2004 when his horse Amberleigh House became his fourth National winner.

Mark McGwire

Born 1st October 1963 Pomona, California. Powerful 6’5” baseball star with the biggest hit in the business. Broke Roger Maris' 37 yr-old homerun record. Then 34, McGwire broke the record with his 61st homerun on his dad's 61st birthday. Mark finished the 1998 season with 70 homeruns. It was the most exciting event to take place in major league baseball history. Mark plays for St Louis Cardinals, and is a notorious slow runner. He gets over this handicap by simply hitting Home Runs. Way to go Mark!

Born 10th November 1970, Westlake, Ohio. US ice skater who with her partner Todd Sand competed in the 1994 & 98 Olympics and numerous World Championships - winning a bronze medal in 1996. Now professional, they appear in Stars on Ice productions. www.meno-sand.net

Jack Nicklaus

Born 21st January 1940 Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Bear, one of the greatest golfers of all time. Jack has over 70 PGA tournament victories to his name, and is now a respected Golf course designer.

Born 23rd August 1977 Edinburgh. Scottish squash champion and current number one, Pamela has been bouncing about the squash courts since the age of ten. National Champion since 1998, she has represented her country nearly 50 times.

Born Dublin 21st January 1979. Educated at Blackrock College, Brian is the most naturally talented Irish Rugby player of his generation. His 3 tries in Paris during Ireland’s win over France in the Six Nations Championships has assured him of a place in Irish sporting history. Without doubt, the green number 13 shirt is his for years to come.

Red Pollard

Born in 1909 and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Died 1981. John Pollard - Johnny to his family - was passionate about athletics, particularly boxing as well as the equine life prior to being a jockey. 

Pollard and Seabiscuit lit up the USA racing circuit, despite numerous injuries to Red in his career, including being almost crushed to death in a horse pile-up and nearly shearing off his leg below the knee.
 
The highlight of Red's racing career came in 1940, when he rode Seabiscuit to victory in the race that had twice eluded the horse, the Santa Anita Handicap. "I got a great ride," Pollard said afterwards. "The greatest ride I ever got from the greatest horse that ever lived."

Born 9th April 1976. Wigan Warriors and Great Britain Rugby League Full Back who made his professional debut at the tender age of 17 years.

Leighton Rees

Born 1940, Pontypridd Wales. Died June 2003. Leighton Rees is guaranteed his place in darts history by winning the first ever Embassy darts world title in 1978. Rees battled through four rounds to beat Englishman John Lowe 11-7 in the final, and his prize was £3000, compared to the six-figure sums now on offer. But the fact remains - Leighton became the inaugural global darts king.

Unfortunately, that was the peak for Rees. In the following year's final Lowe gained sweet revenge with a crushing 5-0 win, and Leighton never really recovered, never making it to the final again and fading away from the top of the darts hierarchy..

Greg Rutherford

Greg, who is based in Milton Keynes, has quite a sporting pedigree.

His great grandfather, Jock Rutherford was a footballer who won 11 England caps and helped Newcastle United win 3 First Division titles in the early 1900's.

Indeed Greg himself almost chose a career in football, having trials with Aston Villa before deciding the long jump was for him.

Sarah has had golf in her Celtic blood since the day she was born. Like Tiger Woods, she was the child of an army colonel and found disciplined practice aided swift progress. Thirty-five years on she has won seven County Championships (Dorset, Berkshire and Cornwall) and represented and captained England, Great Britain & Ireland Students and the Army in golf. She writes for The Times, Daily Telegraph and Golf International, and has commentated for Talk Sport radio and Sky TV.

Born 15th January 1978, Huddersfield. Yorkshire left arm seam bowler who made his county debut in 1997. The son of ex-Yorkshire and England player Arnie, Ryan has toured with the England 'A' team, and was called into the senior squad for the first time in May 2001 for the test series against Pakistan.

Born 1st April 1944, New Orleans. Baseball superstar and fan favourite, who was "Hitter of The Year" in 1973 and 1975. One of only two men to score homers in the majors aged both a teenager and after the age of 40. (The other man being Ty Cobb). Took his rightful place in the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1980.

Born Montreal, Canada. The most colourful referee ever to officiate in the Canadian Hockey League. He was Chief Referee from 1950-1959, Red was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1967. Still a legend, these days Red is famed for his charity work.

Tennessee-born Micky won 38 of 51 pro bouts, but it wasn't until his three explosive meetings with Arturo Gatti that he got the credit - and the money - that his career deserved. Ward earned more money in his last four fights than in the previous 47 combined. He retired after the 'decider' against Gatti, which he lost on points. Seasoned observers of the 'sweet science' named individual rounds from the three fights as being among the best ever seen since the Marquis of Queensberry got the old rule book published.

Born 1966. The most recognisable racehorse trainer on the circuit, Sheena nicknamed “Dimmock” by her peers, got off to a flying start by bagging her first winner only 10 days after gaining her full licence. Celtic Venture’s victory at Lingfield in June 2001 has made Sheena one to watch.

Born 3 September 1986 - Carlsbad, California. Superstar Snowboarder, nicknamed "The Flying Tomato". Shaun is a serial Olympic gold medallist - his latest success was the 2006 winter games in Turin. A household name in the US, he has already starred in two snowboarding movies - "The White Album" (2004) and "First Decent" (2006).

Born Los Angeles 1922. Champion swimmer and Hollywood star who made her name in the San Francisco bathing review "Aquacade" with fellow swim-star Johnny Weissmuller. Starred in "Bathing Beauty" with Red Skelton.

Born 1st September 1975. Welsh rugby star who plays his club games for Cardiff. In March 2003, Martyn became national captain, the 35th from Cardiff RFC.

A flanker, Martyn has been capped at every international level as well as appearing for The British Lions. A vital player in the Welsh 2003 Rugby World Cup campaign.
